First Time Sugaring at Home

Below is conversation between a customer Sarah and Grace (owner of myGoldSugar)

Sarah:
I have a question about your sugaring.  If I were to buy some, what kind would I need, soft, med., etc.?  I have never been sugared and so I’m wondering if I can do it myself at home?  Or is it really complicated.  I did watch some of your videos on youtube.  How long would a tub last?

Grace:
I recommend a jar of Medium-Firm. It does take awhile to get the hang of but once you figure it out, it works great! After you master the Medium-Firm, you might want to order a Medium or Medium-Soft next time. The softer sugar works better on finer hairs. You might notice needing to go over an area more than once with the Medium-Firm on areas that do not have coarse hair (like an upper lip). But it still will get the job done.

Oh–when you are first learning, you will go through the tub rather quickly, it might last about 2-3 months if you are using it on multiple body areas. After you get the hang of it, a tub should last about 6 months since you can usually do 1 whole area with only a small ball of sugar.

Sarah:
I’m excited to try it, Thanks for all the help!  I’ve never waxed or sugared, lol.  Should be interesting.  I’m sick of keeping up with the shaving so I think I’ll start out with my legs, they’re probably the simplest and least painful

Grace:
Start growing your hair in. You want it to be at least a quarter inch long.
Around the ankles is usually the most sensitive part. And the first time always hurts the worst so you might want to do a little each day instead of all at once.
The arms are usually less sensitive so you could practice first on your arm hair to get used to it. And if you get stuck with the ball method, you can put a strip of cloth down and pull it off that way. My sister keeps some strips of old fabric nearby when she’s sugaring.

Sarah:
Hi, Thank you so much for sending the sugar!  I thought this might give you a laugh.  So I received it in the mail last Thurs.  I had been growing my hair out and it was nice and long, ick!  Anyway, I was totally panicking bc I’ve never sugared or waxed so I thought I better drink a glass of wine before I started.  By the end of the ordeal my husband, the girls, and me were all laughing so hard!  I decided to start on my shin, and the first pull hurt sooo bad, I screamed!  Then it seemed to get too gooey to pull off so I had the girls get me some fabric and I cut a strip and used that to get it off.  At one point my arm flew over as I ripped fabric off and slammed into my wine glass, sending shattered glass and wine all over the floor where I sat.  Later I accidentally flung the strip of sugar off my leg and onto my daughter’s arm, removing a patch of her hair.  By the end of the night my bathroom had broken glass, wine, sugar all over the place, and sticky fabric scraps strewn about.  Needless to say I was one sticky mess, and it only took me 3.5 hours to get my lower legs done, and one side of my bikini area!  The label should say “Don’t try this at home, unless you’re a professional,” LOL!!!         It was a great experience, hopefully I’ll get better.  Do you think the sugar is better a little cold?  I couldn’t get mine to stay in one piece like on your video.  I definitely saw hairs with roots all on the sugar but I had some small hairs left from being broken off I guess?  Should my legs be completely smooth when I’m done?  On average how long does it take for the hairs to start growing in?  The side of my bikini area that I shaved has already grown in and the other hasn’t, so that’s good.  I’m just not sure I can handle that area.  Again, thanks so much for the sugar, it was very generous of you.

Grace:
Thank you for sharing your story. It’s so fun that it ended up being a family event! I can just picture it. I would have been laughing along with you all!  It’s not uncommon to have those experiences when you are first learning it, so don’t be discouraged. You will keep getting better and faster every time you work with it. The sugar might work better not heated up (especially when you are first learning) if you want to use it like in the video with the paste method. Or perhaps just 5 seconds in the microwave to help you pull a piece out if it’s really firm. Wearing gloves can help because it keeps some of the heat from your hand transferring into the sugar. Room temperature does effect it too, so keeping the temperature close to 70 is better than having it at 75 or higher. Anyway, I’m sure with practice you will find what works easiest for you…if you are willing to give it another try. At least sugar cleans up with water. If you were waxing, it would have been a lot worse! The stubble you feel is normal on the first couple times you do your legs. When they have never been waxed before, they are much more stubborn and that’s why you get the breakage. If you keep up with it, you will notice more and more coming out each time. What I have done in the past, is shave my legs after sugaring to get any of the stubble or missed hairs and that way you get to experience smooth legs. If your legs are red or bumpy afterwards, wait until the redness is gone before shaving so you don’t irritate your skin more. Then sugar again in about 6-8 weeks when the hair is long again.
